right guys bit of a poll for you.

who prefers the sound of the k&n filter over the standard box?

i have to say i prefer the standard box, now i dont know if i got a faulty one but i fitted the k&n to the red coupe i had and oh my days did it seem noisy! all i could here was that beast sucking in the air!

dont get me wrong its a nice noise but i couldnt here the wonderful exhaust note anymore whice to me is far better noise.

do they make much difference to power? or petrol consumption?

I've read that a couple of times on here, does that elevate the roar slightly, as I feel at load the sound from the engine is lovely, could do with being a touch louder though..

I love the suction noise from a turbo not sure if you can hear this with a standered airbox so I'd have to say k&n.

I prefer stock box because I hate the articulated lorry sound when changing gear. It's all personal choice but I don't like a car that looks so classical italian sounding like a chavaru Impreza when chaning gear, it is wrong.
That said, I do like the sweet induction noise at the top of the rev range with a K/N.

thats what i hated, that dump valve type sound when changing gear so after so thought im sticking with the box but going to put a bigger inlet whole like per has done as he says their is no extra noise just better air flow.

I'm trying the K&N at the moment, have had the standard and will try the drilled standard next. Must say, I think the dump noise through the K&N is nice but I don't like how noisy the engine sounds on acceleration!

Coming back from Wales on Sunday, (I was bored) I thought I'd try to video record the sound (you know what I mean) with the K&N when the motorway was quiet ........ my wife soon put a stop to that ...

YouTube phone video

Obviously, with my daughter in the car I did not swear, (note I kept my mouth firmly shut!) but believe me, when I was turning the video on my phone off (see video) ... under my breath I was cursing the grump bag, no fun wife I have (well, she's sensible really) smile

Hum....I think I might be more than a bit grumpy if you were driving me whilst using your phone !!
And if your daughter was in the car you need to check you priorities. redcard

Sorry if I sound grumpy and boring but "what are you doing "!!

P.S It might be a good idea to take your vidio off youtube.

Mate - you really need to stop preaching!

If you don't want to do it that's fine. I do not need to justify my driving abilities nor priorites to you. On an empty motorway bar one car in front, I shall do as I please and see fit.

PS - Yes, you do sound grumpy and boring wink

PPS - I find it quite rude that you would even 'suggest' that I would put my childs life in danger - below the belt!

Has anybody got a rr graph showing the difference between k&n, std box & drilled box ?

For what it's worth; I did a RR with/without my airbox (4" pipe mod + std paper filter).
That is, lift the lid open 100mm = no filter at all.
Surprisingly, the power was down by some 10hp.

Didn't get any graph with me sadly.

Standard airbox sounds really nice, especially with a K&N panel filter in it so you can just hear a tiny pssst of the dump valve.

K&N induction kit is the worst asthmatic Darth Vader playing the accordion type sound ever.

A panel filter in the standard airbox seems quite popular, so will probably go for that route myself. You don't recommend drilling the airbox jimbo?

It doesn't make the slightest bit of difference to power or torque if thats what your looking for and it does make it a little noisier.

Up to you, airboxes are cheap from the breakers so buy a spare and cut some holes in it with a hole saw, you can always swap back to standard when the mrs is in the car smile

"Mate " ?

I don't know what is worse;
Being arrogant enough to think that your supposed driving skills exempt you from the law.
or
being stupid enough to put it on youtube.

Doing what you please and see fit, does not negate your responsibilities to your family and other road users.
If you want proof try Googling,John Payne,Philippa Curtis or Lord Ahmed.
Its the lack of this kind of vidio, on this forum ,that sepurates FCCUK from many other sites.
Maybe if you had to clean up after a few fatal RTA's you,d change your mind.

Just fitted the K&N today to replace the standard box and k&n panel filter and have to say so far Im not happy. Loads more noise in the cabin of the filter sucking in the air and the dump valve is now 5 x louder sounding very chavvy. Will give it a few more days to see if I can live with it and see if their are any power benefits but if not I think Ill change back.

Noise aside, my findings are that it is definitely torquer low down with the airbox compared to the cone setup.

^ as above, it did seem to pull better higher up the rev band though

Personally, I cant live with the sound, even the panel K&N I have gives a sucking noise. May go back to a normal filter all together

I had a cone filter on my last coupe for all of 5 miles before it got removed!

Strange thing is - driving to work this morning (had in for a week now - K&N Cone) I'm starting to get used to it, indeed, it was a most pleasurable experience (could be the Friday factor though!)

Thread revival. Where do you drill holes and at what size in the stock airbox. I've had open filters on the rest of my Coupes but feel for for power reasons it's best to have the drilled setup with a K&N panel.

you will most likely gain absolutely no power at all by drilling the air box, It does however make the 5 pot sound very nice laugh

Drill 4-5 2p size holes bellow the air filter on the passengers side of the car...job done thumb

Good to see you back mate, I hope you keep this one longer than you kept your sprint 20vt!

Makes the 4 pot sounds nice too. You betrayer of the 16vt cult Mr Sam! lol

Oh this one's a keeper, I can feel it. She's gooood! (Touch wood)

I will probably not gain any power at all but shouldn't "lose" any like you do with an open cone!

I swapped the std. 2" trumpet pipe for a 4" one, definately felt more eager at top revs! The grade of tuning matters here I suppose (I'm sure the 2" trumpet is ok for 220hp but maybe not 320).

My filter is the std paper one.

Are you sure the K&N cone is making a difference, and its not just you thinking it is because of the noise? (placebo effect?)

IIRC, the standard airbox with K&N panel is hard to beat unless over 300bhp.

If anything, with a cone you may gain a little hp at top end, but lose some hp and torque lower down

5hp at 7000 rpm is all very well, but where in the rev range does the car spend most of its life?

Nigel once made a standard airbox which you could open one side of via a lever in the car, bit of extra noise when you want it, standard when you dont! Search the forum for it!
