I had that happen on one of my 16VT when I first bought it. It was fitted with 100pcd alloys and no wobble bolts, and the threads in the hub had stripped.
Gaz you are lucky the wheel didn't come off on that dual carriageway near your place...

Happened to me in my mum's Clio two days after I passed my test.
First day got a puncture, second day the spare wheel turned out to be corroded beneath the paint - the holes for the bolts got bigger and bigger on an 8 mile drive home that the wheel fell off going round a roundabout! There was me thinking there was a stone in the brake...

Few years ago one of my Alfasuds was knocking badly, having just been to the Alfa dealer for some love.
Both front wheels had very loose nuts....
