Can someone tell me the cost of 12 months tax for a 20V NA coupe please. I've seen one for sale locally with no tax and just need some bartering ammo.

On a similar note, I was reading another post regarding car tax and someone stated that if your car was registered after a certain date then you would be paying £400 next year. Is this true? My car was registered on 18/04/2001. I can't find anything that proves or dis-proves this statement on the internet - does anyone know?

Thanks.

If your car was registered after 1st of March 2001 then you will pay tax according to the cars CO2 emmision.

So if it is Y reg or newer you are going to get screwed.

Cut off date is 1st March 2001, bad luck. I've seen references that say the CO2 emissions are 240 g/km (see here ), that's pretty high, puts it in the top "gas guzzler" band "G" and the DVLA site says it's £400 per year, but only for cars registered after 23/03/06, they don't say what it is before that? (I suspect £210 at the moment, same as band F over 185 g/km) However this report shows that if your Coop is reclassified in the new band M, it will mean the top £400 in 2008/09 and £445 in 2010 °\(

My Pug 306 cab would go up from £210 today to £270 so not so bad.

I do think it's bad that many cars several years old are being penalised excessively by tax levels designed to encourage us to buy less polluting new cars: if the same system had been set up at the time we might have been able to make a more informed choice

You could always join in on the PH fuel and tax protests on 19th July and express your displeasure at being continually hit, not because you should, or deserve it, or is required etc., but simply because they CAN. \:mad\:

Does it give your CO2 emmisons or band on your Log book?

At the moment, the tax is based on emissions for vehicles manufactured from 1/3/2001 (23/3/2006 for the 225g/km band G). You can check your car's official emissions here: http://www.vehiclelicence.gov.uk/EvlPortalApp/ (click on Vehicle Enquiry)

My 1995 coupe comes out as NA for CO2 and says the tax this year is £185; the 2003 Cupra gives 203g/cm and falls in band F - £210

The proposal that the government is dithering about is whether to backdate the Band G - more than 225g/km - to 2001. If your car is under 225 g/km or pre 2001, then presumably there will be no change; band F and lower presumably stay at whatever the minister sees fit.

Pre-2001 don't appear on the DVLA form V149 - Vehicle rates of excise duty - and neither does £185; I suspect this is a catch-all rate based on capacity not consumption.

Once the government realise loads of people will just go and buy old cars and run them into the ground, they will simply move the goalposts again.

Don't say I didn't warn you.

Protest while you should.

I'm sitting here with my log book and it clearly states my reg number X*** ***
The registration date 18/04/2001 (DECL/D MANUF 2000)
CO2 240 G/KM

It does have a validation character of 'Y' though - not sure what this means?!?

So 'they' still don't know what I'll be paying next tax year?

Maybe they gave it an X reg because it was manufactured in 2000.

I am not sure where you stand on that, you may have a case to argue for cheaper tax.

That's what I'm thinking, especially after reading Barnacle's post "At the moment, the tax is based on emissions for vehicles manufactured from 1/3/2001"

I wonder why it took them so long to register it? It has always slightly baffled me.

It's obvious, they took one look at your name and thought "yup, he's gonna really pay for this in the future \:\/ "

It was sat in a dealership waiting to be sold I would imagine. Or left in a field forgotten and unloved.

Sorry to quote this from the DVLA

'Cars registered on or after 1 March 2001 (based on fuel type and CO2 emissions)'
