Opens and closes the purge valve which allows the fuel vapours in the charcoal canister to be burnt in the engine. Its a valve that is very close to my heart having spent the last month chasing down small air leaks - if it start to leak is screws up your fuel trims.
First the one way valve that scavenges crank case vapour using plenum pressure went faulty, great I found the fault and STFT came back to spec. A week later STFT went screwy again and it turned out to be the Purge valve leaking. I guess after 20+ years they wear out.

An in-depth look at the ECU connections - again, for the Marea, but it's basically the same - on Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DLEAebb66BgIt's in Portuguese, but the auto translate on the subtitles seems to be pretty good.
