After you good people's recommendations again. My trusty Canon MG7350 has been diagnosed as terminal and needs replacing. Must havesColour Scanner WiFi Height limit of 41cm including any required access to the top CD printing (or maybe not see below) Nice to haveSeparate trays for 2 paper types (ie A4 & 6x4" photograph paper) Duplex The natural successor to the Canon is MG7750 but I was wondering what the alternatives are. What I've liked about the Canon is that it does all the above. What I haven't been so keen on is that it's died after 3.5 years (8900 pages for what it's worth). I've had HP and Epson before that and I'm sure they lasted longer however there's probably about three times the amount of printing going on nowadays with big school homework and all that. It also seems to drink ink (although made a quantitative analysis of this) at an alarming rate but this may be linked to the previous point. Some quick maths has our usage at about 50 pages per page which seems huge but the 8900 figure came from the printers counter (MrsWishy did a part time degree a couple of years ago which may account for the lion's share of that). It's for our home network and gets plenty of use and I hadn't really thought about lasers previously due to price of colour ones. However I've had a look at Ebuyer however and a few options crop up if I ditch the CD printing requirement. I will miss that though as it is very useful.

That looks a solid piece of kit. I like the fact it's got a 250 sheet tray and and ADF. Can you scan striaght from the ADF? I lose the CD capability and second tray though and it's quite close for size, does the scanner bed lift up lift below the EPSON print that is on the top left

Yes you can scan fax copy from the ADF - thats kinda the point it will save to a network drive/computer or a few cloud services like dropbox. its default is pdf for ADF feed which is perfect for me. Not actually tried to print proper photos on it so if thats a key thing you may want to consider something else - its more a workgroup type printer than a photo printer. We don't print photos much so no big deal for us. I think there is a rear feed which you could use for photo paper. Yes the ADF lifts to expose the scanner platter. Than then also lifts with the ADF to access the ink cartridges. The units about 26 cm tall and if you open the cover fully it would be too tall but you could open the lid(s) to about 45 degrees which is probably enough for most needs. I have mine mounted on a pull out shelf with only a few cm above when in place. When pulled out it opens to about 30 degrees which is just about enough to open and change cartridges.

That's shorter than I read online at 26cm. the issue I have with height is that it will live in a built in wardrobe. The advert I read had it at 32cm high which wouldn't leave much room to lift the top.
The photo thing I can get round (as it's not my main usage), it's just been nice with the Canon that I can have one tray permanently loaded with photo paper and the other with A4. I can decide which to use without moving my backside which is useful as the printer isn't within hand reach of the main computer (and on a different floor to the laptops). Input for photos being at the back will be a PITA though.

I stand corrected, I'd read shipping height not actual height which could be workable. Thanks for the food for thought.

Thinking out loud here. A deeper look at lasers doesn't come up with any serious options. Looking further at ink jets brings up an Epson Expression XP640 @ £103.95 which covers all my must haves and a Canon Pixma MX925 @ £99.99 which does all the above plus has an ADF. I'll have a better read later but I'm leaning towards going back to an Epson. I still feel that, good as my current Canon has been in other areas, it has drunk me out of house and home and hasn't lasted very long. The CD print on my previous Epson was way better too. The Canon one works once tuned but I wasted a few discs getting there.

I've got that mx925 and its pretty good for what I need. The photo quality is very good - though the process for this is a bit of a faff. Haven't used the scanner, and didn't even know it had one, I've got a v700 for that.

Best advice I got a few years back from a print shop was "ink first, printer second". Often when you buy a new printer what you are getting is an expensive set of ink with a printer thrown in free. So check what the running costs of the printer are going to be on ink replacement - I use Canon printers for my home office and all share and use the same cartridges and use 3rd party inks without issue. Normally get 5 full sets and an additional 5 large black cartridges for a total of about £35- £40.

Was having a mooch through PC World yesterday and they had the at Epson Expression 645 at £80 so I just bought it. It looks similar to the one I linked above but in white. Not my first choice of colour but seeing as it lives in a wardrobe anyway that isn't important.

Well it's in and up and running. First impressions are fine so far. Output tray needs manually opening when printing which isn't as convenient as the automatic one on the Canon but seeing as it lives in a cupboard I may just leave it open most of the time. It's a lot quicker than the Canon. I haven't tried photos yet but on paper the Canon was better, this use is only occasional though. If the CD printing is similar to the Epson I replaced the Canon with then that aspect will be better. The Canon required a lot of offset adjusting in Photoshop whereas the Epson software always just worked. Job done, cheers for the input all.

A very quick look at the CD print has it as very similar to what I had two printers ago.
