Invest in something like a Rough Guide for a pretty good overview and generally reliable info.

Good walking area apparently and an opportunity to catch up on a little Cathar history....

Think Ryanair do Biarritz or Perpignan

Mirepoix is a lovely medieval town, with a great Market day (Saturday maybe?), Puivert is also worth visiting and right in the foothills, as is the little town of Chalabre, though is a bit quiet. The lake at Montbel is good for swimming and canoeing etc

Second that, having been to Carcassonne a couple of times....is it not a tad far away for Pyrenees??

Laruns - a pretty nice place. Excellent walking in the area.
