I'm getting a bit fed up with these nuisance calls to my mobile which are usually to do with PPI as far as I can tell (I never answer them, but Googling the number usually shows they are nuisance PPI calls or similar).

So whilst I have blocked these numbers, what they do now is fake a different caller-ID with a local area dialling code, presumably to make you think it's someone local that you know.

For example, I get a call that shows up as 01344 244261, an unknown number to me. It diverts to HulloMail (cheaper than T-Mobile answerphone, ie: free) which reports a missed call with a different number 01792 917551.

But it's also happening at home on the land line, with a number like 01276 9xxxxx which appears to be a new chunk of never used before numbers starting with 9.

I wish these people would go and get a proper job grr

Yes i have had these and when asked they said we route it through the local telephone exchange to make it cheaper if you call back!
Yeah right! as you said just to make it look more likely to be a useful call rather than a nuisance!

My wife had someone hit her car.

She's been utterly swamped by claims companies - apparently legally

I hope working on trying to stop it rather than trying to make it easier for the nuisance callers?

Yes we're trying to stop them using what looks like a genuine STD code to mask their originating number. Unfortunately it's not something that can be done in a short space of time.

my girl had an horrific motorbike accident on Thursday 27th August last year and it reached the papers on bank holiday Monday. I answered my girls phone at the hospital that day about 3 times with the opening line being we believe that you have recently been involved in an accident. I phoned the police officer in charge of the case as I hadnt even contacted her insurance and he confirmed that the local police forces sell the information........tvvats!

The trick is to answer the phone and immediately start ordering a pizza.
