Hope someone can assist. Quick summary.

Ran Spybot to remove malware.
PC ok but weirdly the WiFi card deactivated and I couldn't get it to re activate. So did system restore to last restore point.

But upon restart PC ran windows repair but then says " cant repair automatically" so you re start and it just repeats this process. So I am stuck.

PC is windows 7 64 bit version. DELL STUDIO with Core i5.

Is there an option to restore without losing all my files ??

I certainly hope so frown

I have recovery disc and Dell data safe backup.

Cheers

Is the wifi can still installed. Best check under device manager . Right click my computer and click properties.
Think then detail(I think)
Under network devices see what's installed.
If it is there- it may just need switching on.

Could be a physical button on the front or even a key press fn+f2 etc

Does the machine boot up ok still? Also what make and model laptop?

Problem is it won't boot past windows repair. So I cant get into any settings etc. The WiFi is the least of the problems... I just need to get back into windows.

Make/model is in the post above. thumb

Have you tried the old safe mode method by tapping f8 on start up

I held F8 down but nothing. F12 and F2 are ok. So I can get into BIOS to select boot from CD.

But not safe mode .....

The point for F8 is just after the BIOS screen, so keep repeatedly pressing it during boot until the menu comes up.

As mentioned try "safe mode" or "last known good configuration" sometimes works.

Pull the drive and transfer it to another machine with a caddy.
Then fresh windows install?

Try SHIFT-F8, or Fn-F8 when booting...

You could also try an external USB keyboard.

I think you have to continually tap f8 on start up rather than hold

I'm using an external keyboard. F8 doesn't seem to work regardless of when I press it.

Will keep trying.... my neighbour is a computer buff so will ask him when he's back off hols.

Make sure the dvd drive is empty, and press f12 at the dell screen, rather than f8.

Ok - I can do that.

What do I do then? Is there an option for safe mode?

Cheers

Different laptops have different keys to enter the various bios/factory restarts. Google what the F key your laptop has and tap it like mad when the computer starts up.

Load up safe mode and then do system restore and there should be the option to undo what you did.
