I think you were at Tatton when we were looking at the display model, as well as sitting in it, etc.

Love the way they look, but think they should be faster than they are.

A rear wheel drive, good handling coupe sounds good on paper but lack of poke and poor fuel economy would soon become tiring. You can tune them but then you would also need to spend money on upgraded brakes etc.. Which makes it very expensive, so pretty pointless imo.

How about any of these as an alternative?

S2000

These cars are all fun to drive and can be had for less money than the GT86/BRZ but also have the power to match the looks and handling.

Toyota should offer more powerful engines for the GT86 and they'd sell a lot more imo.

I haven't driven one, but my perception is in line with what others have already said.

I imagine it to be a bit like an MX5; good looking and fantastic fun through the twisty stuff, but lacking in any real power or speed.

Presumably, like everything else, there will be a more powerful, premium-price version along in a minute?

There was a story on these and the supporting mods on pistonheads a few months back.
Supposed to be a very neutral handling car, with enough poke to have fun without having to do excessive speed to.achieve.

Tuning mods were horrendously expensive!!

I actually took out a demo GT86 last Sunday for a test drive. This is a lovely car, well equipped and for a rear-wheel drive really does handle in the wet (it was chucking it down). Really good until you get out accelerated by an Audi A5 saloon which left me eating its dust!

This is the trouble with cars like this. All the reviews are very favourable towards it; great fun, great handling etc. But then you see them drifting it around a track for hour after hour... You can't do that on the open road! You'd get away with speeding a lot longer more than you would going sideways around every roundabout.

Far better to have a worse handling car with a lot more grunt.

Well it depends what one wants from a car. The GT86/BRZ is not that slow (0-100 in about 16.5 secs) but modern "expensive Audis" have got very quick. Substitute better tyres and the Toyota should be well balanced and grippy. The low spec tyres were added to make the car oversteer more easily than maybe it should. Some of that can be dialed out agian with higher performance tyres. Almost every car will be out run by something else, that's life but is not that important in the modern world of dense traffic, speed cameras and low speed limits. The Toyota is a car I would certainly like to try to find out what all the hype was about.

Are those actual test figures?

Have a look at Car and Driver's instrumented test results. The real performance seems very comparable with a 16VT. But the car feels a lot more solid than a Coupe to sit in. As I said, not driven one yet. However, modern cars have much more grip than standard coupes, so are usually simply quicker in the twisty bits and all cars can do 70-80 mph

To me the GT86/BRZ promises to be a car that is nice to drive like the Coupe. Hence why I'm still interested in trying one. Probably won't be buying one as my 20V is staying for now and is being joined by a really fast coupe when the ice here melts and I can collect it

Yes, Autocar's road test data. The distances are calculated from the speed increments but they will be spot on. I'll go with caranddriver's data in future as it looks more like what I would expect.

I would just echo neil's comment really, that it depends on what you want from a car. If you're after the maximum possible performance for the money then it's probably not the best choice, but if your priority is good handling and you like the styling, and not necessarily after the fastest thing on the road, then I think it would make a decent purchase.

Agree that it looks like a much faster car, bit like a Porsche Cayman or Nissan 350Z / 370Z. As a result, it "should" have 250 - 300bhp to keep up with the looks.

Having said that, you can have lots of fun with 200bhp.

The crux for me is that I would be gutted every time someone burned me off a the lights in a family saloon.

At least in my NA Coupe, I know it is a "classic" car, so doesn't need to race everyone in a Scooby. The Toyota on the other hand is a new performance car, so needs to hold it's own. If it had been a roadster like an MX5, or Honda S2000, then I think it would be fine. It just looks too fast.

Well a similarly priced Audi TT will be similarly slow and probably poverty speced to boot. The Nissan is from a price and power class above. The Porsche costs double. To put this performance into perspective, a 2006-2009 Jaguar XK 4.2 V8 is not appreciably faster under 100 mph. At its price point, the GT86 is actually quite a lot of car for the money which should also be well made and reliable.

I'm just basing my opinion on the look of the car rather than the price point. It looks like a fast coupe / GT car, yet the performance is more roadster.

The 0-60 is nearly the same as our old Leon Cupra 180bhp family saloon (same engine as Audi TT).

Don't get me wrong, I love the look of the car and I bet it drives really well too. I am just a little concerned over the power stats.

The Autoexpress article sums up well:

As it's an NA, not much. Probably 10% max.

But I think that would spoil the point of the balance of handing and power in this case. If it had more power, then it should be designed to cope with it, rather than an afterthought.

It's actually for my missus and not me, and will be more than powerful/fast enough for her as she's got no track experience and has no interest in gaining any. She likes a reasonably fast, stylish road car and this ticks all her boxes.....and i will enjoy driving it too

Built by Subaru. If our 17 year old Impreza is anything to go by, very reliable. It has only needed a fuel pump and a brake caliper in that time

When I worked for Toyota I sold these, got to thrash them around Donington at the launch and used to take them home regularly. They are an excellent sports coupe that can be used every day with total confidence in reliability.
I think the problem is that many people have a different view of what a 'sports car' is these days.
I don't think it is a car that you'll drive once and fall in love, it will take some time for all of the benefits to shine through.
If your thrills from driving come from out dragging cars on a dual carriageway you'll be disappointed.

Yeah. So much of a car for me is about the sound. I was hoping the GT86 would sound a bit fruitier given that it is a boxer.

I couldn't agree more! In fact I point blank refuse to buy even a really good car if it sounds rubbish.

I'm sure I remember the bloke I spoke to with the GT86 at the car show saying the engine noise was enhanced through an amplifier or car speakers or something, to make it sound better, as it was quiet.

I'm sure proccy will get his Mrs to sort this though, with the noisiest exhaust system available for the car
