Anybody got any recommendations for a good printer/scanner combo? Bits like cartridge costs are important as it'll likely get some frequent use.

Thanks in advance.

Brother have some good ones, I have a combo with fax function that cost less than £90 and the ink cost / use seems good also.

If you have an iphone and want to print straight from the phone then look for a printer with air print.

Kodak offer printers with cheap cartridges, but as a consequence they may not have as much ink in them.

I have a brother *wired network* laser printer; it has wireless versions available as alternatives.

No problems whatsoever with it. I would not recommend an inkjet printer for, really, anything: the only case where it might be useful is if you need to do colour prints and even then, there are either colour lasers or simply taking your memory stick to a local print house. Mono laser printers are so much cheaper than ink on a per page basis...

For £50 this a good deal

A combination of points and vouchers and we paid just over £20!

I have an Epson Stylus SX525WD which has been ok and doing it's job for the last 3 years or so.

It has separate ink cartridges, so not too expensive to buy.

Bought a Canon Mg5350 for reasonable money. Separate inks and evil bay means 4 full sets of inks for £12 or so.

First thing I do when buying a new printer is check the carts can be had on the bay for silly money.

I have a Canon MG6350 which works great and does pretty much everything although I just use the wired connection as oppose to the included wireless one.

I've only had it a few months but it does appear to drink ink like nobodies business. I'm well past the initial "probably not filled with much ink at all" cartridges so it's not that. I haven't tried to count pages yet but it seems way more costly to run than my previous HP/Epson ones.

Up yours Photobucket.

I have an Epson Stylus too, Mine is a SX536WD.

It gets a lot of use printing club documents and is considerably more economical on ink than the HP All in One I used previously.

Thank you all for the suggestions. It seems as long as I can get the cartridges for reasonable money I should be fine.

Barnacle, I'm leaning towards an inkjet as occasionally I will need it for the job.

Gunzi, thank you I'd not considered air print. I assume android is similar?

As my printer started giving up (had it since 2002, fantastic Canon i950 which still gives incredible prints, but some banding now and new printheads no longer available) I've gone for your recommendation there. I absolutely love Canon stuff. Have a Pro9500 MkII as well. I'll show you a thirsty printer there!

From what I've found, only HP do Airprint straight out of the box

My Canon is airprint enabled and I know it works as all the girls in our household have those new-fangled apple things.

Yes - I recent bought one for my folks. The first thing I needed to do is download new firmware: try doing that with just an iPad or iPhone. Spoke to the shop and they said the only one that works out of the box in a native Airprint way is HP. Believe me, I pushed back hard as I hate HP. I bought an HP. It worked well.

Maybe I got a later version as no firmware needed here.

Possibly - though this was only about 2 months ago.

Okay, went to the shop, bought this. First: the entire installation isn't for dummies. Luckily I'm not a dummy. The auto-config for wireless didn't work but I'm sure it's got something to do which what I did and the fact the printer wasn't exactly next to it (requirepent for WPS).

Anyway, got it up and running and the print quality (except for the slight banding due to some blocked printhead holes in my i950) is EXACTLY the same. Which... is superb! smile

The first print was worrying though, I inserted the i950 print I did previously, hit 'print' and... the paper just came out. I thought it didn't print, but looking at the picture that was already there it was slightly darker. Now, this is really impressive because the print DID print... over the old image, and it was EXACTLY in the same spot. Really the image just went darker, no ghosting, no double image, no double borders, it just overlayed exactly.

iPad / Apple Airprint? Out of the box. Great!

So now I got...
- double sided printing
- scanning (GREAT quality, without ANY noise, even through network connection)
- airprint
- networked printing (LAN and Wifi)
- direct on CD printing (had that on my 9500, still...)

So to be honest, I'm quite chuffed with this kit.

As I said, quite love Canon stuff, and I'm happy it proved a good one again!

Yep, I do like mine especially double sided printing and having two proper print trays (albeit low capacity) so I can load up with photo paper and normal A4 at the same time.

You missed off the best bit though, it looks like some form of spaceship! I'd be interested to hear what you think of the ink usage after a few months.
