Best front brakes? #1409240

Hi guys, my newly acquired Coop is starting to get under my skin now, so I am looking at splashing some cash on her.

Coming from a Type R Accord that had lots of money spent on it, I am used to good brakes. I ran Ferodo DS2500 pads on her with Bremtech grooved disks. Not only did these last me years, they performed VERY well, especially when hot.

I believe the Coop is running Pagid pads and some noddy disks at the moment. As soon as they get warm they judder like hell and are, well, pish poor!

What setup do you guys recommend? I feel that the Brembo calipers are constantly moaning about the quality of parts they have to work with at the moment.

Cheers all,

Rob.

You'll get lots of opinions, but here's mine:-

For years, I ran Pagid Yellows, including on track. They never faded, despite some very serious provocation

I'm now running Carbotech - they feel as good as Pagid Yellow when there's some heat in them, but they're less good from cold. Carbotech also squeal terribly - I can get squeal when braking at motorway speeds - normally squeal is only at low speed/light load

As for discs, there is a lot of choice, but many have been proven to be incapable of withstanding the abuse that Coupes inflict (wheelarch design means that cooling is poor, especially on the inner face)

DBA 4000 are the only discs I have actually worn out - all the rest have died through warping. Having said that, I'm 4000 miles into a set of cheap M-Tec discs and they are still straight - the only problem being that the grooves are quite wide, meaning they are noisy and the grooves don't go to the edge of the disc, so they have a moment's hesitation in the wet.

I'm on Tarox F2000 all round with Tarox 112 pads. Pretty happy with them. Although I don't really take it to the track that much. But the one time I did they were okay.

I've gone through multiple sets of both yellowstuffs and now Carbotech XP10's Nigel, I'm surprised you haven't noticed the difference in stopping power when warm, particularly on track.

It really is like night and day.

And of course, in my opinion!

It's more the disks I am interested in at the moment guys, as the juddering does my knackers in!

I am very tempted to go for my DS2500 pads again.

You won't go wrong with DS2500.
As Nigel says, the MTEC discs work well but are noisy

If you're after discs and can afford the best, then I strongly suggest you go for DBA4000 - that are (by a margin) the best discs I've ever used on a Coupe

They are difficult, if not impossible to get hold of though - maybe its time we commissioned DBA to make some....

I made an enquiry late last year, and was quoted around £300 a set for an order of 10 sets. Would struggle to get enough interest at that mark, so left it at that.

Maybe we should do a poll Dan?I know i'm only one but there are plenty of likely candidates on here...Who knows, we might surprise ourselves and get a level of interest shown, , potentially lowering the price a little more?
I'm guessing that was just the fronts?

im also in need of new discs an pads and thinking of chucking any old drilled an grooved ones on purely for the looks with decent pads

not fussed if they last or if they are upto racetrack performance just decent braking from cold is all i need

i never hammer the car enough for long enough to really worry about fade , will make some mods for cooling though but would be good to see more opinions on the cheaper and easier to get hold of discs out there

I used DS 2500 pads and there good value for money and highly recommended.
If your really wanting to a use the brakes with confidence then get pagid carbon RS orange.
Awesome.last forever, and never fade even with my driving style around the track .
Not cheap at £300 a set but well worth it.

I briefly had the idea of getting the 305mm dba discs from the gtv etc and re-drilling them to 4x98.

The 330mm Alfa GTA discs/callipers are a wicked upgrade. About a £1000 new but you can sometimes find a bargain second hand.

same as biggens with carbotec pads

sparco used the calipers on his race car and he gave them a right kicking.

(I should add I use 3G disc's with Carbotech XP8 pads - have been very good, but my latest engine upgrades have ended their lives quickly.)

You will also need 17" wheels as well if you upgrade and don't have them already

Yep per pair - your choice of Drilled/Grooved or both

There was a Group Buy on here a while ago ran by Deannn_20VT - similar prices then
