As some of you may know, I'm upping sticks and moving to Dubai in November. The job comes with a 3 year renewable contract and I want to stay as long as I can stick it.
The Mrs is staying in the UK for the first year just in case I don't get on with the job, we've always got one income and my pension to fall back on.

Now the dilemma, the coupes tax runs out this month so I'm putting her on a SORN, buying a nice cover and putting her to bed.

Is this the right thing to do?

I was keeping her just in case I come back early but financially is this a bad move? A year standing will create maintenance problems and incur costs I would imagine so am I better off saving the money on a cover and selling now using the cash towards a car over there or do I keep her under the cover until I return in ???? years?

I'd hate to see her go but realistically, is it worth keeping hold of her?

Keep it on the road - a car standing for long periods will not thank you in any way.

Let the mrs drive the Coupe whilst you are away.

Once you are settled, import it!! thumb

I don't believe they allow RHD cars over there, I could be wrong there though.
Is that financially a sensible thing to do, pay for a years tax and an MOT for a car that will be driven once a month? It just doesn't seem to be the logical thing to do, I'm thinking with my head and trying to ignore my heart at the moment!

Well, if it passes the MOT with nothing needing doing @ circa £45, and £215ish for tax, keeping it on the road for a year will cost you less than £300 + petrol obviously.

coffee

If you've got room for it on the drive Stan, it may well be an option!

Keep it, better the devil you know, if left standing for a while. Come back, buy a bad one and your going to be spending more than recommisioning.

Besides, absence makes the heart grow fonder!

I agree with keeping it smile

They are worth hardly anything now, but when you come back, they'll either still be worth hardly anything or will have gone up in value.

Maybe let someone you trust use it while you're away and go halves on the tax, insurance, etc.

Tough decision really, but I would do my best to keep it.

I've got a garage at home but here's my second problem, once Jenny makes the move over there with me, the house will be rented out. Now I'm pretty sure the people renting won't want a 13 year old fiat in the garage so it will have to be moved and stored elsewhere anyway.

There is also the connective tax issue, believe it or not, the UK government can now tax you on an overseas wage if they believe you intend to return to the UK. Owning a house is fine as you can rent it out long term but they will look at things like owning a car in the UK whilst being abroad, it's absolutely ridiculous but it came in last April and is very real! The only difference between a mafia and a government is our mafia was voted in!!
I may put the car in my mums name, put it in her garage and SORN it there?

If it helps Jim I rent dry secure storage for my own personal small collection of Coupés, it's a monthly charge that's taken by direct debit and I'd be happy look after and keep an eye on yours while you're away.

Personally I'd moth ball her as the value of these cars can only go up in the next 2-3 years, hopefully nice examples will command a better price.

Pm me if I can help further wink
