: ) <-

Surely when that little collection of non smilie making material is put together, it is actually a very smiley man who looks like he'd be painful to womanfolk, especially with his lack of arms to prop against.

It's rude, get rid!

On topic - I would love a Widget - but will not be saying I'm a definate.

if it's the 'donkey work' that is a factor in you deciding to go ahead with this Neil. I will gladly put my name forward to assist in this, with stuff like board population, connectors & any other wiring etc

only thing I can't do is mass-produce PCB's - so basically if you get the boards made up & ship them to me along with a kit of components, schematic with parts list & component reference I'll populate them for you - for maybe a free one ha

or do you get the boards made and populated outside?

Jamie

Thanks for the offer, Jamie - it's more the hassle of managing the orders that takes the time, daft as it sounds.

I'm looking at using a UK PCB maker this time around instead of my usual Bulgarian chappie, but I need to check a prototype first as he can't/won't do single boards - my entire run is at prototype levels as far as he's concerned!

Ok, keep me informed, anyway the offer is there for assistance in any aspect of the actual manufacture, for maybe a discount on one - or I just buy a complete set of parts off you & make my own, along with the others

I was planning on making one using your released design on here, but I understand there is an issue with display compatibility..?

Not only that our PCB manufacturing equipment is antiquated! lol. Obviously we get all our boards done well priced outside - I can find out who does them for us if you want.

I made up the PCB for 'Spookly's' project, but I never heard anything back from him how he eventually got on with it. I wasted about 3 photo-resist boards making it!, but I could probably do one for myself, If I knew I would be sucessfull with the build etc.

Cheers, I'll see how I go. It's double sided, plated through, 0.5mm sm contact spacing and 8 though tracks, so it's pretty tight...

I have plenty of experience in very intricate soldering, pcb work, both standard & surface mount, fine gauge wiring, strain-gauging etc.

I do all sorts, right from surface mount PCB's, cabinet building, right upto terminating 300A HV cables on electric vehicle battery packs lol

Might have mentioned that the arduino mega 2560 board has plenty of io lines and if bought from hong kong is very cheap.

Might short cut the need to build/design a board.

The problem's the interface, not the IO - plus the form factor has to match the display and the panel. Believe me, I've thought about the options.

Neil, I know it's been asked on previous builds but; is there any chance of a red display?

Green, titanium, red and black in one interior would bring on a migrane!

Sorry, Jimbo, but the LED is internal to the device and the colour filters in the device are selected to match. Green is all that my supplier currently have (from half a dozen different variants last year - though red was never one of them!)

In daylight, they all look black and white; it's only in the dark you see the backlight.

Why not change your dash lights for green led's?

Since the original widget display is quite small, what's the chance of using a bigger lcd - something that would fill out most of the air vent?

Folding green stuff... I'd *like* to put a larger - 3.5", say - full colour LCD or OLED in there, perhaps with a touch screen. But they ain't cheap, they need twelve times as much data writing to them, and so the processor runs out of steam and that needs upgrading to an ARM or something... which needs all the code rewriting from scratch, and probably some kind of operating system as well.

It's a hiding to nothing. There's no reason why it *couldn't* be done, but we're looking at two or three hundred quid for the hardware alone.

At the moment we have a proved device with proven software. I'll stick with it, thanks! (The display on the MK4 has twice the resolution as the earlier versions and is about the limit before screen updates take too long; if that happens, the ECU loses sync and if you're doing more than 2000 rpm on the 20vt, you can't get it back. Bah.)

No worries Neil, I'm interested but I'll probably just fit mine in a small box and put it in the glovebox.

Is there a possibility of a "scrolling" display option so that more lines can be monitored without having to plug into the computer to change line display?

From me, no - I want to keep the software as it is to avoid any (more) bugs sneaking in.

Is this a reasonable list of those who pretty much want one? I still need to test a design change, but I'll take the risk and order a large quantity of circuit boards and parts once I've tested it.

Price looks like £150 - a little more than last time, sorry about that... things change. I still need to confirm the price for the mounting plate.

SEND NO MONEY YET!

I would like it, but I don't need it to be 'on' all the time as I don't want to sacrifice the air vent. I also have the laptop software (and more) so I'm a "possibly" but not "definately".

I don't want to mount this in the vent, can I just have the board and lcd so I can put it in the dash strip?
