If you think that's bad, I used to work for a company who spent nearly 1/2 million on newt trapping. IIRC, only about 20 we caught in the end.

Ignoring the council wouldn't have even gained permission to build the road had it not provided environmental mitigation measures, it would of almost certainly had legal action taken against it if they knownly refused to comply with EU directives. I suspect that ultimately would of cost the tax payer more money.

It'll just come closer to home as the EA won't let the mice go without their public right of way. I think they should of trained the mice to walk on the ground and let them use a drainage route. It seems a much more sensible option to me.
