I thought I was going bonkers when I first noticed these "Variable" prices in Germany. I walked past a garage to get to a bakery, minutes later as I returned the price had increased. Then just a few hours later it had changed again, I mentioned this to my friend who told me "This is Normal in Germany."

Prices here at home are though all over the place. I popped to the local Shell recently and filled up with V-Power, but I failed to check the price. £1.78.9 / L shocked The local BP was just £1.59.9 / L for their ultimate so I should have checked the car, which does list petrol stations by price. If only I had bothered to look at it rolleyes

I'll be filling up in Newcastle and not refuelling until after our first stop in Germany 285 miles later. At present I'm seeing E5 at around €1.81.

Don't fill up on a motorway services. You'll see prices for E10 in excess of two euros; the coupe needs E5 at a minimum and that costs more. In Germany, look for signs for 'Autohof' which are usually close - less than a km - to the motorway, but ten or twenty cents cheaper. And the same again if you can get into a medium sized town and find a filling station there.

I've found Belgium not too bad even on the motorways. Austria used to be cheaper but no more, I fear. Netherlands has ridivylous prices. But even my local place is between 1.70 and 1.85 depending on the time of day; prices here are silly volatile (exchange rate is 1.17 this evening).

If people's routes go anywhere near Luxembourg that has always been much cheaper for fuel. Belgium too isn't normally too bad.
The worst places are usually Netherlands, Switzerland & Italy.

I would say they are not tight-fit, the medium I ordered is fairly generous in my opinion...

I too am of the opinion that the ratted style is not for me, but I suppose there's something for everyone.

Equally, I think a car's designers generally do a better job of designing the bodywork than most aftermarket plastic panel makers, though, so what do I know?

What I really hate to see is a car that's kept in cotton wool and never driven... journalists (and readers!) gushing over sixty year old Ferraris with 'only 4,000km on the clock' really wind me up. If the vehicle is not driven ('just to the MOT station once a year!') then irrespective of the mechanical issues caused by lack of use, it has failed in its primary function.

I don't worry about every tiny scratch on the paintwork; I don't wash it every time I drive it (except in Turin trips, of course! laugh ); I don't refuse to take it out in the rain. Just drive the bloody things and stop obsessing!

Aaand the good news is: thanks to Joe's excellent work, my coupe now has a new MOT (requiring refurbished headlights, new battery, new cat, and the country's last 16v brake light switch), a new cambelt and associated bits, and is once again off SORN and is taxed. Which would have been so much easier if the DVLA website had allowed me to do things online...

So tomorrow, I fly to the UK to drive it to Germany on Saturday. Whee!

(I'm driving a lot this summer: a flying holiday in Sapöens, France, was around 1200km each way, plus the same going between various flying sites. Then 1500km this weekend, 3,000km for the Turin trip, another 3,000km for a flying holiday in Slovenia in July, and I suppose the coupe has to come back to the UK by September...)

Well, I was hoping to keep the Coupe on the drive, even if it was to sit there rotting forever, but it's now been deemed as a total loss and written off, so will be getting collected and taken away by the insurance company's agents when I sort it out with them frown

Sort of thankful I bought the Alfa now as the Coupe was my only and daily driver until March and I'd be knackered for trying to get to work and doing general daily stuff because of this frown

Luca has worked some magic and located a restaurant about 10 minutes (on foot) from the hotel that can accommodate us all, booked in advance. This can only be done by offering a fixed menu though, details of which will emerge shortly. It's likely there will a limited choice, based on fish, meat or pizza, with dietary requirements factored in.

Our contact in NL who is coordinating with Luca will draw up a registration form upon which confirmation of attendance, names/contact details (mainly to avoid no-shows) and menu choices can be entered.

Latest numbers attending are 55, composed as follows:

UK - 22
NL -18
AT - 2
DE - 11
F - 2

I would like to get mine resprayed but don't want the respray to blister, flake, peel, chip etc. so might try to get a specialist to touch up the chips and push out the dents. The Ink black paint seems to last really well.
Has anyone ever ratted a Coupe? Saw this on one of the many Henry Cole programs today an I think it looks fantastic! Ratted E-Type

Love the 850 parked between you - my da had a Mediterranean-blue one with tan upholstery in the mid 60's when they first came out. That was followed by probably my all-time favourite 850 coupé, sky-blue - such fun for an 18 yr old when I managed to get my hands on it laugh
