I like the Philips Xtreme Vision 100% brighter personally. Not particularly yellow, just a good bright halogen white. The bluer you go with the colour spectrum or Kelvin as it is known in lighting, the less effective it is for seeing with the human eye. Use them on main beam and the use a 55w HID on side to give you good night time vision

Just an additional note, if you go HID for the side lights, only go 3-4000k this will give you the best usable illumination and not be too blue 3200k is optimal, but hard to find. They look like OE halogen, but brighter

If you are sticking with halogens, the Philips Extreme Vision and Osram Nightbreaker are the brightest while being of consistently good quality. I think they are currently on the +120/+130% version. Halogens that mimic xenons do so with filters which reduces output. A bit pointless really.

I've tried night breakers too, I found them bright, but I also found the pattern of light to be more dispersed. I also had a pair where the locating ring became unwelded from the bulb carrier causing a short and melting the bulb holder Just my experiance of the Osram bulb, I'm sure I was just unlucky though

night breakers - pair where the locating ring became unwelded from the bulb carrier causing a short and melting the bulb holder Rather unlucky I would hope. I use either the Philips or the Osrams which ever is cheaper at the time. Neither last long but that is a known drawback of "driving extra thin filaments so hard". However, I have never had any mechanical issues with either manufacturer - touch wood!

Surley not on main beam though Iain due to slow start up? Unless there are newer quicker responding bulbs and ballasts?

I have hid's on dipped , main and fog lights but use the digital ones for the main as you get a bigger start up flash when needed .

Has anyone ever fitted These to a Coupé. I presume they would work like most modern Xenon equipped cars. An "ALWAYS ON" HID lamp but with a shield that retracts for the full beam? Only one lamp & no strike time issues. The high beam feed could power beam pattern retract motor? Just a thought...

I have been thinking about exactly this, for ages! just not got around to it! There are only two issues i see with this and thats the headlight lense, not sure how the beam would end up (needs trying really) and fitting to the reflector and still looking.. well not out of place if you go ahead do post, because it will be a very good mod if it works out ok!

There are only two issues i see with this and thats the headlight lense, not sure how the beam would end up (needs trying really) and fitting to the reflector and still looking.. well not out of place 1. The Coupé already has a projector (with a shield) for the dip beam. So I would expect the lens to be fine. 2. Something similar is already in there so fitting should not be too hard. I have a spare set of lamps so I'll try and have a play. Just need to find some time

No I was just thinking of changing the dipped projector for one of these dual function units. This would give HID dipped and main from just one lamp.
I would then use the main beam as a supplementary. You can get HID look H1 lamps now. I have fitted them into the Fogs on the A5 and they are a very close match to the headlamps.
