6.5 inch I believe

They are 6.5 inch. But its pretty easy to fit 6 x 9 inch ones if you fancy it.

I did that the other day. All you need are two long bolts and a couple of spacers (I just used small cubes of hardwood with a hole drilled through them.)

Drill two holes in the inner skin and hey presto.

An added bonus is while you take this apart you can also treat any rust in the sill.

Do the 6x9 speakers need to be amplified or will they work off the stereo unit?

They work off the stereo unit. The advantage being they have a wider frequency range (more bass) than the 6.5 inch ones. In my case these are 6 x 9 infinity speakers which have amazing clarity all the way through the range. In a previous set up I had them driven off an amp, now they are just off the head unit (which is 40w per channel I think) so not amazingly loud but no distortion and a little more bass than was there previously.

The ideal situation would be 2 amps. One of which powers the 6 x 9's and the front door speakers (head unit can limit the frequencies these get to what is appropriate) and then another amp powering a couple of bass speakers behind the rear seats.

For the amount I use my stereo these days I cannot be bothered with all the fuss of that... I will just add one bass speaker off a small mono amp and run the rest off the head unit. The stereo is never going to sound as good as my engine so more than likely it will remain off unless stuck in traffic.

so the front and rear speakers are the same size?

simple set up really then...

front componants - speakers in doors and tweeters on the dash

rear componants - spekaers in the side (as they are now) and tweeters on the rear pillars faing the rear window to create a bounce back in sound...

all speakers amped with a 4 channel

nice sub in the boot and probably a kenwood/pioneer head unit

not a bad way to spend £1k

I have always been partial to Kenwood head units... they hooked me in with the original mask stereo (the one that used to spin around and present the world with a blank panel.) That stereo was great, it had CD changer controls and built in equalizers allowing you to pretty much change anything you wanted with regards to which speakers got what frequencies and volumes.

Anyway I just stuck a KIV kenwood in the Coupe. It is mechless (IE has radio in it only, no CD's etc) but it is capable of bluetoothing to the Iphone or controlling an Ipod. I just have all my music on a USB and it read it all off there.

It looks good (suiting the dash I think) and the screen on the right acts much like an Ipod screen... it shows you the artists and then you select the album... it shows album artwork track length etc. The only drawback to it is that unlike with a mechanical system it is pretty hard to change music while driving as you need to look at the display.
