I have MTEC Discs and just fitted Carbotech xp8 brake pads to my coop before going to Spa. Have I just made a big mistake?

If you also got new fluid you'll have very good brakes! smile
(just remember to bed them in to the instructions)

Just found a few posts that mention problems with Mtec Discs and Carbotech XP8 Pads. Excessive disc wear and discs warping and cracking after one track session. Now unsure whether to keep the pads just for Spa and drive back home then change, or change them or discs now?

I'd order a spare set of discs to take with you! Think it was Nigel who destroyed a pair of discs wasn't it?

Depends how good the Mtec discs are as they do wear heavily with Xp's.

Also depends on how hard you'll be driving as you're not doing a track day per se.

In the coupe.
Early this year i had new Mtec discs fitted to my track coupe along with them i fitted XP10s.
I bedded them in as per instructions.
First heavy session on track i came in and had a cool down. Back out on track for another 3 or 4 sessions before lunch.

Had lunch and then went about 3 miles for fuel,i could feel disc warp vibration.
Back out on track all afternoon and at the end of the day the discs were fine.
I have done about 7 more track day/evenings since all at high temperature's. all is well.

I doubt if Spa will give you any problems lego. Just make sure you have some high temperature brake fluid in the system.

That would have been me. I'm running XP10's with Mtec discs now, and every time I've fitted new Mtec discs and any Carbotech pad, I've warped them and they've needed skimming. But, as others have said, Spa is not "a bona fide track day". But, also saying that, tomorrow I'm taking a pair of Mtec discs (warped after one day) to be skimmed fresh for Spa. Every set I've skimmed has lasted quite well. But as ever, I'd love to find a disc that puts up with the extreme abrasiveness of the Carbotechs. Guess I want too much eh?!

One thing is for certain, couple with a good brake fluid (think Castrol SRF typically) - you'll stop damn well smile

Yup - it was me that destroyed a set of M-Tec discs with Carbotech pads

click to enlarge click to enlarge

Not pretty....

To be fair, the guy from Carbotech spotted my feedback thread and posted some comments

Carbotech / M-Tec feedback thread

I think that M-tec discs are what you'd expect for £80-ish - they're half decent and for some reason, they appear to be warp-resistant.

I've now killed another pair of M-Tec discs, this time using Ferodo DS2500. However, in deference to M-Tec, they suffered a huge level of abuse - 20+ monster stops from over 150mph at Bruntingthorpe - the brakes got hot enough to melt a wheel centre AND boil the grease in one of the bottom ball joints  The discs are still straight, but I think I've done something weird with the grooves, as they are now massively noisy as soon as there's a tiny bit of heat in them - to the point that the vibration can be felt through the car structure

I think I'm going to try Tarox or Pagid next time round

I've ruined some mtec discs as well, but with carbon Lorraine pads. Cracked and warped and they said it was my fault.

I've since used standard pagiddiscs and they have performed a lot beTter.

At least the whole of France will hear you coming !!!!!
Take ear plugs and a paper bag to put over your head when driving through towns and villages.

Seriously my mtec's survived carbontechs just fine.
Now on DS 2500 for the road though.
They're great but not as amazing as the carbontechs but I've sill got some bedding in to do.
I think you'll be ok but maybe take some spare discs so you don't spoil your trip.

Ok thanks for the replies guys. I feel more reassured that as long as I take it easy all should be ok. Boy! Are they noisey and dusty as has been mentioned. All holes in the discs just get choked with brake dust. But boy they make a huge difference to stopping distances? Think I'll change to standard dics after Spa.

Yes very noisy and dusty so make sure you clean the rims at every opportunity as the dust loves to eat the rim powdercoat/paint lick

It sure does. The only way I've managed to remove 98% of it was to use 1500 grit sand paper

Try Iron-X on wheels with a lot of dust - it simply disolves the fine grains of pad & disc material

You'll find the sides of your car are also ingrained with the dust

Tarox discs and pagid pads are my setup.
Works very well and yet to warp the discs.

Stock cheap brakes on the back (APEC) which get hot quick and provide and excellent balance around the track.
Aftermarket rears just don't get hot enough and contribute to front brake issues .
