How do I know which turbo to choose?
Im thinking a GT28R, but then I think to myself, why not a GTI-R, how do you choose?

My car at the mo has got a cat-back exhaust, panel filter and a dump valve, I have got a gtec chip and a PRV BUT NOT fitted it on yet, BUT would like to along with a de-cat
First I want to up rate my turbo.

Pleases help, many thanks. \:\)

You'll be better off getting a fmic first, then look at a turbo.
GTI-R is a straight swap for the std turbo (i think), GT28R not a straight swap.
You'll want a 3" downpipe (£300) with the GT instead of a v-band, you need to adjust the rad fan housing to fit the larger turbo, cut the manifold heatsheild for the new location of the lambda sensor on the 3" dp, adjust the oil cooler pipes to refit the lambda sensor. Not straight forward.
I think if i was doing it again i'd fit a GTI-R or Superspool over my GT28R, i do like the GT28R but value for money GTI-R or SS.
It all depends how far do you want to go ???????

Cheers.

Well the thing is, I think my standard turbo at the minute is on it's way out.

But yes, I did have a GTI-R in mind.
Where would I get one from though? Do ATP do them?

Do you have to rev the GT28R higher to get the same amount of power/torque from it?

I loved the midrange surge of the GTi-R but I've heard the GT28R doesnt properly get going until after 5k rpm, that sort of puts me off a bit...

Not sure, think they are meant to be more progressive than the GTI-R & SS turbo's.
Think it really depends on your set-up.

So where do I get a GTI-R from?
Is that all they're called, or do they have a number?
I'm going to track one down, any help would much appreciated. ;\)

Have done, still not convinced.

max torque at 5000-5500, max power at almost 6700

I want them 1000 lower than that. \:\)

Turbo Dynamics call them a MD238.

they are a standard turbo with a bigger compressor wheel (hybrid)

don't really see a problem with having the power towards the top end of the rev range! with my RS the max torque is just over 5000rpm, but at 3500rpm I'm still getting very useable power. It would be even lower with a GT28R!

I suggest you start looking at diesel engines then ;\)

Or another GTiR, like I had before...

but that only lasted about 20k

1000 lower, not 4000 lower! \:D

Why do you want max power lower? That just means a shorter power band?

Dont know, maybe it would grow on me, but I think the same pull at lower revs feels better somehow. Also I quite like the on/off power band, pootling around below 3k but can also instantly take off without having to downshift 3 gears.

I'm also guessing that it would use less fuel and less wear and stress on engine components, but I'm not entirely sure...
