FMIC water sprinklers - 10/11/2010 12:30

How much BHP can u gain by installing water sprinklers on the front intercooler? and how does it work exactly? does it sprey the water by the RPM or by push of a button?

On a serious note; I've seen some budget kits for this on eBay and I get the impression it'd be a poor investment (to be polite).
The theory is good - anything that can help make what's going into the engine colder will help you make more power.
In primary school terms (As I'm half asleep right now!); as well as the waters temperature affecting what it touches, the effect of it evapourating has a cooling effect (for example when you sweat this principle applies).
Trouble is I don't think a pair of modified washer jets are the way... All you'll end up going is sitting in a puddle, and maybe lose traction from a standing start!

There are cars out there that have this done propperly (Evo's for example), but I can't really comment on how they set it up of how effective it is though I'd be interested to learn.

I've seen other kits which spray Nitrous or CO2 over the FMIC instead and again the idea is pretty good. Trouble is this is an expensive way of doing it, and I can't say I like the idea of spraying CO2 near an air intake!

Re: FMIC water sprinklers - 10/11/2010 13:48

I had it set up on my scooby to only spray water at higher boost. I used a boost switch set at 1bar. that way the button could always be on and work on track.

Forget using it from Sept-March unless on track as the weather is cool enough. I made 1 bhp extra with it on when on the rollers in October laugh

It works well in the summer though. made an extra 13bhp and 12lbft on the rollers in July.

The issue you now have is whether the power gained is worth the extra weight gained lol

I did buy a C02 set up but never fitted it, so cant compare

Re: FMIC water sprinklers - 10/11/2010 14:07

Considering this myself. Although Dave's car did make more bhp with his set up, remember its also good for the engine, cooler intake charge especially if you are already running a gtec etc.

Must be a cheap way of doing an 'Aquamist' type operation?

Used washer tank, washer tubing, maybe a switch linked to full throttle, mist nozzles ?

Where did you get one of these?
Thanks

How much the "system" weight, 1-2kgs? lol
The gain of 13hp is pretty decent and i guess it will be higher gain in hotter countries (like Israel)

I think they didn't made the EVO's and the STI with water sprinklers just for show, sure they squeezed out some extra horses and kept everything with lower temperatures for safer reasons.

Anybody tried filling his airbox with dry ice on the rollers?

Now that's something I could try!

Re: FMIC water sprinklers - 10/11/2010 14:40

heads up, i used a home made water spray kit for my fmic and tested it at santa pod..

it made...

0.01 second differece to my car.

which i cant even say was the kit.
i could of just dropped the clutch or got a better launch.

not worth it unless its a NOS halo unit!!

http://www.alcohol-injection.com/adjustable-pressure-switch-1.html

there you go mate

weight isnt 1-2 kg when its full with water mate.

The problem you face is bottle size to nozzle. My first attempt ment that the bottle was empty before 2 laps of brands. Due to constant use. you need small nozzles.

In the end i went for a spec c 12lt tank which weighs more but lasts longer on track. As said, in the end i used it more as a safety feature instead of power gain.

definitely see more power gain in hotter countries, but remember not to have bottle anywhere near engine bay or its pointless. i will see if i can get videos to work on here as i have one of my first attempt

I live in the south Wales valleys'

I can assure you that no sprinklers are required here laugh

Re: FMIC water sprinklers - 10/11/2010 15:42

i say its pointless after having tried and tested one.

but hey, worth a shot if you got time to do it.

let us know how you get on!

i used a washer jet from a VW.. massive spray patteren and covered the key area!

I don't think it's worth the effort (unless you spend most of the time on 402m strip).. here's a nice article though:

I did make my own at summer, and when it was hot day ( +30 degrees ) test results here :

you can operate a system in all sorts of ways depending on what you want to spend or how adept you or your mechanic is.. whether its all worth it is the the crux of the matter

so to try and answer the do you get gains bit ..

its negligable i would think, its a given that colder air is denser and denser air does give horsepower gains so reducing intake temps works but to get an effective system that would give worth while gains using spray on the cooler is impractical as you would need a constant squirt and to really soak it to make much of an impression

i actually have a set up on mine as well as the aquamist and it is just wiper sprayers along a pipework that runs around the top of the intercooler but i am taking the set up off and taking the pro alloy out and putting an evo 8 fq in which will do a better job than the pro alloy anyway as its a more efficient cooler and although i am using an aquamist 50/50 methanol set up i am not mapping it with that (no issues or problems if it runs out) just running it with a boost operated set up for when running higher boost as thats the only time i would really be thinking about the temps (sustained high boost situations) theres much more efective ways of getting more power! laugh

To be honest it only really makes a piddling bit of difference anyway(hope you appreciate the pun!). If the methanol wasn't so corrosive and you could spray 50/50 on it it would be worth thinking about but if i was you i wouldn't bother. Just get the best intercooler and think about an aqua-mist set up ..if its just for short bursts like 1/4 miles there are better options for reducing temps

I think it will just accelerate the rust more than your car

Re: FMIC water sprinklers - 10/11/2010 19:33

Yeah i agree, unless tracking car alot i dont think its worth to much. i removed it from my car in the end as i wanted to go C02 but opted against that as the sprayer nozzles was going to be near intake

Re: FMIC water sprinklers - 10/11/2010 22:38

Forget water cooling your FMIC for minimal results, what about injecting vaporised water into your intake?

The vaporised water has a large surface area, consequently absorbing heat, cooling the mixture and boosting performance.

The 'purpose built' kits are quite expensive, but on fleabay you can pick up a kit built for a R5 or similar for less than 80 quid.

It would need a few hours of setting up on a RR though for best results.

Lol nar run 1 was 14.3 no spray... Run 2 14.2 with spray... Last run 14.4 no spray..

I think it's a pointless mod but for the cost, you may as well do it!!

Re: FMIC water sprinklers - 15/11/2010 20:36

I used to run one off an inlet temp sensor with a switching relay to spray; at that level it is simple. I expected to use 5 litres in about 10 minutes - at that rate it could make a difference, less than that I wouldn't bother.

I found a draw-through fan more effective - so I had my radiator fan between my FMIC and radiator. I had an additional switch to turn it on, and it helped prevent heat soak between the FMIC and radiator

I have this on my 16VT:

I also run an aquamist from JohnS his monster 20VT.

Needless to say i use more water than petrol with both of them on

have you noticed or clocked any differences dink ?

Re: FMIC water sprinklers - 18/11/2010 10:31

yes, i when we tested in summer i noticed an 8°C temperature drop with the water spray on.
It's quite effective to cool the intercooler.

My car doesn't allow for a verry large intercooler (lack of space) so had to make up for it with the spray and aquamist.

Re: FMIC water sprinklers - 18/11/2010 10:49

...r´you using the coffee-maker pump, the idea is excellent? thumb Anyway, the nozzle is quite similar to the garden sprayer´s one, but some thinner hose will be lighter and easier to fit, if running 2bar max.

Re: FMIC water sprinklers - 18/11/2010 11:14

You need a high pressure pump and a qood quality nozzle with a wide cone and good amomization for maximum efficiency.

Yep, I know that, just never got to remember about using coffee-maker pump... while hearing it work every morning laugh
