blow off valve choices

blow off valve choices - 09/08/2013 18:56

In need of a new one.

What would people recommend? I quite like the idea of the turbosmart duel port that does recirculating and atmospheric.

Thoughts people.

Thanks thumb

I'd go for the ubiquitous Forge Dv006 in stealth black. You'll still hear it working but it's not obtrusive and they are very reliable.

That's what's on at the moment but it has rubbed through and now has a hole in it. It's bodged at the moment.

I was thinking of having a change.

Re: blow off valve choices - 09/08/2013 22:29

I have the Turbosmart dual port on mine. Put it on atmospheric mode when I first installed it. Sounded awful. Then I set it for 50/50 recirc/atmospheric. It had a split second delayed blow off sound.

In the end, I just set it for recirc. Works as well as the DV006 I had before.

If I had cash to burn, I would get the latest HKS SSQV with recirculation fittings. I like that its a fit and forget solution unlike the Forge where you have different springs to play with and the Turbosmart where you can adjust the spring tension. The HKS is "fuzzy logic" if you may. But costs a bomb.

Got the Bailey DV30 recirc.Gets mixed views but I've never had a problem with it in 6+ years don't do much mileage though.. Just looked they are £100+ these days!

Re: blow off valve choices - 10/08/2013 05:23

My first Forge DV006 lasted about seven years and 200,000 miles - the (steel) allen screws seized in the aluminium body and the plastic piston had a groove worn in it where it seated against the body. However, it still worked OK. Mine also had a chunk worn out of it where it rubbed against the battery tray.

I replaced it with another DV006, but he later type, which has an aluminium piston for durability. I also angled it differently so that it isn't touching anything. If it lasts another 200,000 miles, I'll be satisfied

Forge is definitely the most popular upgrade and I'd say its the most reliable. You will need the softest spring though, after which, its a fit & forget item

Stick to what I know then and go forge 006 again.

When I had a recirc, I found that I made a tssssssssht noise with my mouth when changing gears! or dipping the clutch. So it had to go.

I get a good flutter at the moment with the recirculating forge. I don't know if I want a noise change or not now.

Yeah, it's only sat there doing nowt so you might as well. You can have my baileys but it needs sending off or a quadring sourcing for it to be 100%. Spen did say they could get one so if you mic it up and ring them it was about £2 quid for the bit.

Generally with things such as this, it's the owners choice isn't it.

I had a nice flutter on my inky plus, then I read stories about fluttering not being so good for the turbo so I made it recirc, then I decided that was too quiet, I can get quiet from my other car.

So I went HKS copy, that was nice, more like a little birds chirp (aaaaah lovely).

The one I have on at the moment is a forge atmos. For some reason this is the loudest I have ever heard, you can hear my gear changes a few miles in any direction .... so it'll need taming down a little. The wife get's embarrassed by it, probably why it's still on wink

The good thing about these and probably why it interests me is that they are easy to change, so I feel like I am actually doing something useful mechanically, in reality that's a bluff, but there you go.

I saw an online ad for a HKS black on eBay Turkey (it was a fleeting glance) and only 29TL (Turkish Lira), these go for £100+ in the UK. I might buy one and bring it home with me - 29TL is like £10.00 - wow!

Re: blow off valve choices - 10/08/2013 18:23

My bailey is a venturi, it sounds like a sniper rifle! I got a forge atoms as I created myself an issue during a clutch change and a strip down of the valve that was in vein.
The forge is very quiet compared to the trumpet and small exit on the venturi.

This one came on the car. I just converted it to recirculate yesterday. Best of both worlds, stealthy or remove one pipe from SIP and fit silicon endcap for maximum attention. 60 second job.

I like the khs......skh......hks...... that type of bov but aren't they quite pricey?

Re: blow off valve choices - 23/08/2013 17:32

You can pay a lot for one or...
ebay

Re: blow off valve choices - 23/08/2013 17:36

Ooops. Add 15-20 quid for the recirculating fitment, snag is 25mm fitting only available from Canada or U.S. I`m using the 29mm and AutoSiliconeHoses reducer.

Re: blow off valve choices - 23/08/2013 18:16

Are they genuine though? That's the problem with ebay, so many snide products.

Re: blow off valve choices - 23/08/2013 18:47

I wouldn't trust one from ebay, fakes are rife and they are prone to failing.

Re: blow off valve choices - 23/08/2013 19:18

I think the older products are now cheap, the latest ones are like £250. Didn`t occur to me that these might be faked. I used to run a shop on ebay, and in about 950 transactions I had 5 rip offs. The rip offs are what stick in my mind!
I have had an original Bosch fail, car sounded like a rally car but turbo got knackered. I also have a Bailey but I don`t want to sound like a bus.

Re: blow off valve choices - 24/08/2013 04:24

Dare I suggest no dump valve for the flutter noise? I've been running without one for years and >40k with no issues on my original 130k turbo.

Re: blow off valve choices - 24/08/2013 07:27

What is the set up for no bov?
Posted By: Anonymous

Re: blow off valve choices - 24/08/2013 08:35

Well you just blank the fitting on the black pipe in addition to the one you have already blanked.
@Gunzi. Glad to hear you have not had a problem. The turbo I broke made a peak of 34psi(Lancia 4 pot-so 6:1 and high boost). This five pot motor has 7:1 I believe so not huge pressure. Yes I know there are a few 2 bar+ cars out there, I wonder if any of those would run BOVless.
When the pressure is greater than the strength of the vanes they bend. Perhaps we could hear from an expert? teacher

Re: blow off valve choices - 24/08/2013 08:45

Ah, the old no DV Chestnut! If there was no need for one, why did Fiat bother? That's my thinking. You just blank off both holes Muzzy2.

Re: blow off valve choices - 24/08/2013 10:44

I've not run one on the rx7 for ages, got fed up with testing a blitz one for leaks...... Runs fine, but then it's a journal bearing turbo and 0.9 bar of boost only. If buying one new I would go to forge direct, very well made etc.

Re: blow off valve choices - 24/08/2013 11:30

What about the small vac pipe that goes to the plenum? just bung that 2?

Think I'll give forge a ring and see if they will send me a new top and maybe a new spring.
Posted By: Anonymous

Re: blow off valve choices - 24/08/2013 11:36

Yep, bung that one too. But I still don`t recommend. The least problem if you have no dump valve is turbo loses some spin between gears.

Re: blow off valve choices - 24/08/2013 13:51

Im NO expert so don't shoot me down in flames! Just interjecting my thoughts!
I thought the guys that didn't run with a dump valve were the rally cars as they generally flat shift (change gear whilst flat out on the throttle) its generally only a suddenly closed throttle whilst at high boost levels that's supposedly a problem (boost has no where to go all of a sudden so sends shock waves up and down the pipe work, I believe it's the shock waves that can damage the turbo
My car is for pleasure only and I would like as many years pleasure from it as possible so basically it had a dump valve as standard so it will always have one, unless somebody convinced me otherwise, but I quite understand the idea of people trying out things and being different and the noise without one is pretty cool!

Sorry to resurrect an old thread but I have one of these hks valves minus the recirc. Is this one you have fitted (if you still own one or use the site) on a straight induction pipe, or the standard s pipe?
can anyone else help me in this matter on what I need to fit as I know not what to get?

Cheers David
