can anybody suggest what to do other than a carbon wrap to a fading centre piece that's totally spoiling my cars interior im considering black piano paint is this an option ?If so is taking the dash out a massive job?

A simple option is to remove all the rubber gunk and just go with the black plastic? Mine looks ok enough that I have been happy with it like that for 2 years.
You also do not need to remove the whole dash - I'm sure their is a "how to" on here.
If I recall you need to pull out some of the switches and ash tray and then undo the retaining screws?

Guys,

I have used meths and a cloth on my centre dash console to remove the rubber gunk, but this will not work on the handbrake centre console.
Is it possible to strip the rubber gunk with meths and wire wool on the handbrake console and then polish to the finish like the centre console in this thread? Has anybody done it?
I'm just concerned that the wire wool will scratch the console.

Thanks.

Nail polish remover....removes anything....even black gunk in coupes..

Re: centre dash - 22/09/2014 14:48

Just rub it in...no abrasives needed

Re: centre dash - 22/09/2014 14:58

And if you want the interior black plastics looking like new...use autoglm vinyl and rubber care...not cheap, but damn good stuff...will never use any cheap rubbish cleaners ever again

Don't use nail varnish remover with acetone or anything with acetone in, it will destroy the plastic,
I too have had good results with methylated spirit

Whilst you have the dash out you should check and repair any fixing studs that may have split

Did you use wire wool or just a cloth?

Re: centre dash - 23/09/2014 08:52

Just a cloth

Re: centre dash - 23/09/2014 10:25

Hmmm. Didn't budge on mine. Much rubbing needed?

Re: centre dash - 23/09/2014 12:22

Are u going to cover it/ respray in the end. If so , as I said earlier mail polish remover works. Have to keep changing bits of cloth otherwise u just move it around ! Rub hard !! If you're going to just polish it up maybe use something else.

Re: centre dash - 23/09/2014 18:02

I was going to polish it up, hence not wanting to damage/scratch the plastic.

That was my plan, however as great as it looks de gunked it's gone a bit cloudy in some areas. As such, a couple of Gloss black paint and primer rattle cans have just been purchased from Halfords.

Re: centre dash - 23/09/2014 20:57

i found if you rub too hard it went slightly cloudy in one spot, but overall a good result though, takes a lot of shining up though, better off painting it afterwards

Re: centre dash - 24/09/2014 08:26

Agreed, that looks lovely.

I'm thinking of painting now. Maybe that will make the process easier. This way, I can use a wire wool to get rid of the gunk.

Where is the piano black from? Halfords?

Re: centre dash - 02/10/2014 17:59

All I did were soak it in hot soapy water for a while then scrubbed away with some wire wool, took a while mind but got there eventually
