That roof isn't attractive but with it down it does look good. Wonder how much strengthening it has, although judging by the fit around the door/bonnet maybe not enough.

It's like you can do a stretch conversion on any car, but in most cases you shouldn't.

When you jack up the coupe, the doors don't close well, which proves the torsional stiffness is not brilliant.

I'm sure with that cut and shut, it's now like a wet lettuce.

And the odd thing is - even with the hood down, it actually looks too long somehow. It should be a two seater, maybe six inches shorter...

Oh well, by 16v just got a bit rarer.

The Coupe's design does not suit a soft top at all. The door handles on that look lethal.

I think it might be fun to drive a Coupe with the top off, but it looks like a death trap to me, and certainly not worth the asking price. The soft top looks like the ones they used to put on the old Leyland minis and mini mokes, which always looked awful. I found that in sunnier countries, with the top off, you just get too hot from the sun and have to put the top on to get some shade. And driving with no roof is so blowy it's quite dangerously distracting without a hat. So I have never really seen the point of convertibles. Apart from the fact that they tend to have very low miles. Also those press-studs on soft tops are a real pain - really hard to do up and they come undone easily too and then the top flaps all over the place.

I enjoyed driving my Bertone X1/9. The roof was quick and easy to remove, in fact, I could do it whilst waiting for the lights to change. Also found one could drive with the roof removed in rain, provided you stayed above 50 mph.

Living in the sub-tropics, I found the best time to drive "topless" was on summer evenings.

A plus with the X1/9 was that it was built to meet US crash standards, which were later withdrawn, as US manufacturers found them too difficult to meet.

Last summer, an Audi driver was driving like an absolute pillock on the A13 with his roof down. He'd undertaken quite a few cars and was cutting drivers up. He then undertook me (I was in the left hand lane) by driving onto the 'entry' slip. I decided it was the perfect time to wash my windscreen. Perfect shot, all over him and his lady friend. That alone would put me off driving a convertible.

Some years ago - late 80s - I owned an open kit car and two years on the trot while driving it down the M1 a defunct firework rocket landed in the car...

I do like an open car mind.

I can recall a thread years ago where people who broke them said they were completely unstable without the roof and fell apart. This must have strengthening.
